The Job Of An Airbrushing Artist

By Paulette Mason

A tool called an airbrush was first invented in the 1890s and it has come a long way since then. It is used today to create stunningly realistic art with many different avenues of expression. An airbrushing artist has to master some difficult techniques to produce these effects. They spray dyes, inks or paints onto many different types of surfaces, often using a freehand process.

With the advent of computer graphic programs, using the airbrush for retouching photographs was no longer necessary. Other avenues for its use had to be found. It was only with the current craze for customization that its use has proliferated, affecting many different industries.

There are a number of varieties of this tool being produced with all kinds of attachments. However, they all work in basically the same way. A trigger is depressed, releasing air and when this air is compressed, suction is created pulling paint or whatever medium is used from a reservoir. This is fed into the airbrush and creates a spray of tiny droplets.

There are many stunning effects that can be created when airbrushes are used by skilled artists. They often use a freehand process, requiring a steady hand that comes with practice. These artists are experienced enough to understand exactly how much pressure must be applied. They have to know their tool intimately, understanding how far to hold it from the surface and the different angles required.

An airbrush can be used to create designs on just about any surface. Canvas, leather, fabric, wood, metal, glass and plastic are all suitable surfaces. One of the most popular applications is in the automotive industry. Motorbikes, cars and trucks are often seen with customized logos and designs.

Custom designs are also created on items of clothing and accessories. T-shirts, boots, helmets and even handbags can be decorated with a design or a logo. Murals can be sprayed onto walls. Cosmetology is another industry where airbrushing is used extensively.

There are many such artists specializing in various different avenues today due to the popularity of this art form. Choosing between them can be difficult. Viewing a portfolio of the work already done is extremely helpful. A portfolio will give an indication of what can be expected from a particular artist. It can also be a source of ideas for those unsure of exactly what they want. Artists are prepared to help with suggestions as well if necessary.

Creativity and originality as well as a steady hand are essential to producing good work. Success is often dependent on the time and effort spent in practicing and acquiring skills, sometimes alongside an experienced mentor. The incredibly detailed and realistic images these artists create have elevated the status of this art form and given it the popularity it enjoys today.
