People want to learn how to speak like a British person for a number of different reasons. One of the most common is if you are an actor. Generally if there is a call for someone to be a Roman emperor or a space alien or another figure of authority for some reason talking as if you are from Britain seems to convey a sense of otherness. Before you contact a tutor you need to think about the variety of voice you are attempting to learn. The first images people have of Britain tend to be of London and England. However it is worth remembering that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are all part of this group of countries while at the same time being countries in their own right.

Furthermore even within regions there are variations of accents. London itself is a very diverse place. While some people may speak with less distinct way of speaking others may speak in a Cockney accent around the East End. In Brixton the slang is often influenced by the ethnic origin of the people there.

Equally within England itself there are a diverse range of accents. As with America there are often strong differences between the North and South of the country. Furthermore there are differences within the North and South as well. For example the way someone speaks in Liverpool will be different from how someone speaks in Manchester.

If this is the kind of voice you are trying to learn there are a few fundamental rules. With this kind of voice you do not roll your R and the T is pronounced in words such as duty. For some words such as herb the H that would be silent in an American accent is pronounced.

One of the most basic lessons a class should teach you is to avoid rolling the R. This tends to apply to most parts of England and a lot of other areas of the United Kingdom. The exceptions to this are some Northern accents, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Another aspect is pronouncing the U sound in words such as stupid or duty.

There are various places that can help with vocal training and coaching. The chances are you can find them in your local area. A quick search using your normal search engine should bring up numerous results and let you compare different tutors and their lesson plans. Ideally it is also worth checking to see if they lived in Britain for any length of time as well as their teaching qualifications and experience.

If you do your research and compare your options carefully you will find the right tools to help develop your accent.
