It was during the first English civil war which took place at around 1599 that Richard Overton was born. He was from England and studied at Cambridge. In his early childhood, he did some acting and later when he joined the college of queen, he performed as playwright. He lived for about sixty five years but his life was quite fascinating.
In his early twenties, he along with three other people formed a party which they called the levelers. The levelers had some great ideas that they believed if implemented, would revolutionize the world. They were also fed up with the monarchy and Overton started publishing pamphlets so that it would be abolished. He said it was archaic. The group also wanted court trials to include the jury and by then, there was some form of censorship on the media and any written material which had been placed by the monarchy.
He did not have a church that he was quite attached but he felt he needed to. The articles he had published had however criticized some churches like the Catholic Church and the Church of England because of the way they handled their spiritual matters and what they taught to their followers. It was not just the articles that he used to pass on information but he also held debates to discuss church reforms.
This man studied the bible widely so as to gather more information about Christianity. He went on to serve God and finally found a church called the General Baptism church in which he became dedicated. This church had teachings that had some contradictions and these teachings also were different from what other churches taught.
The message taught by most churches was that when a person died, his soul departed the body but remained alive. Richard opposed this saying that it was not just the body that died but the soul as well. He believed that both the body and soul resurrected together on judgment day. This led to disagreements with the church.
The articles that he had been publishing were making him very popular around his country. He was opposing so many things that even the government begun getting concerned. They became more careful and began to follow him around secretly so as to scrutinize his behavior. He was very aggressive towards supporting equality for all because he believed that everyone was equal to their neighbor. With the government on his pursuit, he got imprisoned twice.
He avoided getting arrested again by fleeing to Flanders where he continued being liked because of his good personality. He treated his neighbors as equals since he was a man who had always been fighting for equality among all. He did not discriminate on anyone regardless of their personal background. This was a man who could be described as kind, gentle and generous.
While in school, he performed well in English and mathematics. In fact Richard was on record as one of the best mathematicians in his class. Though not loved by the government, people had come to love him very much. Richard Overton also enjoyed reading his publications because even he himself was fond of his humor.
