By Cornelia White

Hard hats are types of helmets that are worn when carrying out certain duties like construction and mining. Some of them are fitted with safety visors, flashlights, ear protectors and chinstraps among others. The color of the head gear may signify different roles of employees this depends with a company or your place of work.

This type of head wear can be placed into different categories. Construction firm caps are worn by people who work in construction sites. Due to the nature of their work it is essential for people working in construction sites to wear a protective wear on the head to guard against debris and other sharp or hard objects. The gears worn by this group of people should be made according to the set standards and approved by the relevant authorities.

Too much exposure to sunlight is not good as ultraviolet rays from the sun and the heat reduce the strength of the helmet. Keep your hat in a cool and if they are being transported from the factory to the market, they should be packaged well and placed far away from the rear window of the vehicle. In case you work in an environment where you are exposed to too much sunshine, ensure to replace the gear more often.

Type I hard hats reduce force of impact as a result of a blow got from the top of the head. Most caps that are manufactured fall under this type of wear. Types II reduce the force caused because of a blow received at the center or top of a persons head. The inside of this hat is lined with thick foam that has a high density.

Carry out a simple test to check whether there has been degradation on the covering. This is done by squeezing the case inwards using both hands and realizing the pressure. Where it returns immediately to its normal shape, it shows elasticity. Any deformation or in case the shell is not elastic you should consider replacing it immediately.

Read customer reviews about their products to have clear knowledge about how their products work and if they are long lasting or not. Different manufacturers make different firm caps depending with their target market therefore do not just assume that a cap from any kind of producer will work for you. Some of these manufacturers may not meet all the set standards hence the need to be careful.

There are helmets that are designed to suit women perfectly. They are made using lighter materials and are made more proportional for women with small heads. Just because they made using light materials does not mean they are safe. They offer the same kind of protection that other helmets give. Buy a head wear that has the right fitting for your head.

Most helmets worn by children are made of plastic material. These hats do not need to be approved by the existing authorities. Children wear these head gears when they are playing or riding bicycles. It has a head band that can be adjusted easily and is usually worn by children who are 3 years and above. For children who are over 6 years need to wear hard hats that have been approved OSHA.
