When it comes to art, it is wise to allow children to explore a variety of mediums. One fun option is collage. Take your child on a nature walk and have them collect twigs, leaves, rocks and pebbles. Then glue the items down on a piece of construction paper. Talk about the different textures of each of the items, such as the smoothness of a pebble or the fuzzy feeling you get when you touch some of the leaves.
You can also consider a project with tear art. For example, draw a large pumpkin on a piece of paper and give them a few sheets of orange paper in different shades. Have them tear off small pieces and try to glue them down inside the lines as much as possible. After the orange paper has filled the shape, have them use brown or green bits for the stem and black triangles for the nose and eyes. This is a great Halloween or autumn activity. You can use pink and red paper and fill a heart for Valentine's. For Christmas, use green bits to fill a tree and small colorful circles on top as ornaments.
