Guidelines On Writing Children Poems

By Debra Cooley

Guidelines on writing childrens poems help poets to write those poems with ease. One must be able to put themselves in the position of a kid in order to be in a position to effectively write a poem to them. The guidelines try to highlight what should be included as well as what should not be included while writing poem for kids.

Before starting to write any poem for kids, any intending writer must choose the topic to write about properly. The topic should be interesting and entertaining to them. If you chose a wrong topic, then the poem will not make any sense to them. Some of the topics which one should consider may include the following. A topic about school, a topic about animals, a topic on monsters, a topic about magic and a topic about funny characters.

It is worth noting that boy child have a different interest as opposed to the one for the girl child. The poet should also take note of this fact. The topic may be on animals, monsters, school, farming, magic stories or any other funny thing. The poem should be written in a very simple language which kids can understand.

Children need not to learn anything from the poem all they require is to get entertained by the poem. Therefore, there should be no focus on any moral or any lesson to be learnt from the poem. If the poet brings some aspects of morals in the poem, then the kids will not understand whatever message is being conveyed. Just like adults, kids do not like to be looked down upon.

The writer should therefore ensure that the poem does not look down upon the children. This is because if it is written in a way that it astonishes the children, then they will develop dislike for it. In order to make the poem easily understandable to them, several lines should be repeated across the whole poem. This will refresh they memory each time they encounter the repeated line.

Use of tongue-twisters is also a good technique to use in writing for the kids. The tongue twisters are easily memorable to the kids and it also makes the poem to be interesting. Rhythms and rhyme are also equally important for kids. They also make the poem to be interesting and the one which kids would like to read again and again. The intention of children poem is to entertain them. Therefore if the poem fails to achieve this intention, then it does not serve the purpose for which it was written for.

Therefore, poems are also not an exception to that. The writer should ensure that the children are engaged and they participate fully in the poem. Constant practice also makes perfect. In this regard, the writer should practice constantly and should write a lot of poems about children.

An interactive poem also works best for the kids. Kids like to take part actively in what they are doing. Therefore the poem should be made in a way that it includes the interaction of the kids while it is being narrated to them. Children do not like those who talk bad about them. Or those who want to depict them as being naive in what they are doing. The poet should therefore ensure that in his or her poem, children are not patronized or looked down upon. One should also consider reading and listening to other poems by the experts who have written childrens poems previously. This will give them an insight of what they need to do, and how they should do it.
