How To Choose A Violin Chinrest Styles That Fit

By Linda Ruiz

A chinrest is a violin attachment that is commonly made up of a wood or a plastic. This equipment ensures that the chin and jaw of a violinist is positioned properly. The best kind of wood that suits a chinrest is ebony and rosewood. But some modern ones are made up of plastic. Due to the advantage it gives, it is already considered as a typical part of the instrument.

The primary objective of a chin rest is to provide stability. Rests may differ in attributes and there are some violin chinrest styles that might be so uncomfortable for you. It takes a lot of trying to get that perfect rest. Even though this is the case, knowing the differences between these various types of rests can decrease the time you need for looking. Here are the factors you need to consider.

To start, you need to select the style of chin rest that you want. It is up to you whether you would like to go for an across the tailpiece rest or the rest that sits on the left hand part of the tailpiece. Mostly, the selection depends upon how long your arms are.

Younger violinists tend to have slightly short arms. In this case, across the tailpiece style of rest is appropriate for it. This is also true to some person who has shoulders that are narrow. This is to help them properly position the violin closer to their left shoulder. Giving them enough distance to reach the musical instrument.

If you are a skinny person and you have angular kind of jaw. A defined arched chinrest will provide you adequate space and comfort. For an individual who has jaws that are plump, choose a longer and not so raised ridge. Choosing the right curvature that will compliment your jaw structure will provide maximum comfort. This is very important specially if you have an upcoming performance where you need to stand there and perform for a couple of hours or a half an hour.

Keep in mind that if a rest does not properly fits you, it can create skin sores and strains in your muscles. Having a device that will help you hold the violin hands free is a very important thing specially if you are performing in a longer duration. It also prevents you from developing fiddlers neck.

This kind of condition is common in people who use a violin in an extended period. You can determine that, if you can see a reddish and inflated sore on the neck of a person where the instrument is usually placed. This is caused by the too much friction and extreme pressure.

We have different ideas on how we define quality and comfort. For most people, they tend to be more concerned on the material that was used as well as the color. Contingent upon what you are looking for, always seek things that gives you an advantage.

Bottom line is, always look for chinrests that best suits what you need and you are comfortable with it. If possible, go for high standard equipments. This may cost you a bit but at least you are certain that it will provide wonderful benefits.
